CLICK HERE to download a modified HYMN VERSION: KEY OF C.From the world-wide covid pandemic, to national uncertainty with the 2020 election, to local unrest amid racial injustice events, the need for PEACE has been on my mind.
Particularly, I’ve noticed how often peace is mentioned in the Bible: “I will listen to what God the Lord says; he promises peace to his people, his faithful servants….” Ps 85:8, and “Great peace have those who love your law, and nothing can make them stumble.” Ps 119:165So in selecting a theme to choose music for my ensembles to play for school Christmas programs, PEACE naturally came to mind. Little did I know I would find “peace” in a Thanksgiving song, one that I arranged for a student back in 2013 as a left hand octave study.
The arrangement originally had only one verse. When I took another look at it to expand for this internet arrangement, I was amazed to find PEACE in verse 2:

O may this bounteous God through all our life be near us,

with ever joyful hearts and blessed PEACE to cheer us,

to keep us in his grace, and guide us when perplexed,

and free us from all ills of this world in the next.

– Martin Rinkart (1586-1649)

What is even more amazing is that Martin Rinkart lived in a time of great distress: war, deadly plagues, and losing his wife. (See the history printed on the sheet music.) Yet it was in this time that he wrote a song about being thankful to God.
