Description
This arrangement is a result of studying harp in SCOTLAND, Summer 2022. I was a recipient of a stipend from the Scottish Harp Society of America: many thanks to them.
If you first master the DAMPING technique in my Balmoral arrangement (explained in a youtube video), learning this GURGLY will be easier. I learned this Scottish ornament from both Alison Kinnaird, but more thoroughly from Karen Marshalsay, who studied under her extensively.
I thought this technique would be too difficult to master, but the tune makes all the difference. I always wanted to create a beautiful “Morning Has Broken,” but the perfect arrangement came out of the original setting, Mary MacDonald’s Christmas poem “Child in the Manger.”
Verse 1 = The melody ornamented simply with the gurgly, to learn the technique
Verse 2 = More harmony and motion added
Verse 3 = Harder difficulty, alternate harmonies & rhythms
This arrangement is available free to SHSA members, on the website in the Fall 2022 Kilt.
